Pixel Artist

Weathered Sweater

Part-time · Contract

General Information:

  • This is a paid, part-time, contract role.
  • Hours will be "as needed". This means the amount of work may be inconsistent from week-to-week depending on what's going on at the studio.
  • If you are hired, there is a 6 week probation period during which we will be evaluating the relationship. After this period we'll determine whether or not to extend the contract.
  • Give and solicit real time feedback from other creatives to continually raise the quality and craftsmanship of the product
  • Partner with PMs, engineers, researchers, content strategist & QA, overseeing the implementation of the user experience from product conception to launch - as well as post-launch design support
  • Quickly solve issues with your cross-functional leads including user research, data science, and product management
  • Advocate for game design and help us build a great, welcoming, and inclusive game design community within Reality Labs and throughout Meta

Job Information:

  • This role will involve making pixel art for various styles of game. Currently I am prototyping a top-down, JRPG-inspired game, so we'd likely start there.
  • Ideal candidate has made and loves to make mockups for game ideas. Things that look like screenshots. Since a big part of this job will be exploring how games might look before they are made, this experience is a requirement.
  • You should have a deep understanding of how pixel art is created and implemented in game engines like Unity, Game Maker, Godot, etc. Experience making terrain tilesets and laying out tiles for auto-tiling is therefore a must.
  • This role is experimental, so there's a bit to learn and hoping to experiment with how it works or perhaps doesn't work.

Studio Information:

  • The studio is currently just me and anyone I work with on an as-needed basis (like you!). I've worked on many games over the last 10 years or so! And I've been indie and mostly self-funded that entire time!
  • I tend to work on one or two internal projects at a time, and historically have taken on contract work to fund things. The goal now is to generate income from our shipped products so we can sustain more of the studio through sales.
  • We pay through Bill.com. An account is not required, but makes things easier! This is ACH/direct deposit or wire depending on where you are located. Generally we'll pay monthly for worked billed in the previous month.
  • We communicate through Slack (moving to Discord soon) and currently use Trello for product/project management.
